General Information

How much light do you really need?
Here are some basic formulas to figure it out.

General Lighting

(L x W) x 1.5 = Wattage

Take the length of the room times the width of the room in feet and then times that number by 1.5.

Task Lighting

(L x W) x 2.5 = Wattage

Much like the formula above take the length times the width of the room in feet, but instead of multiplying times 1.5 try 2.5. That should give you the right intensity for any reading, writing or fine detail work like chopping or sewing. The best form of task lighting will come from sources like lamps, hanging pendants, or spot lights.

All fixtures hung from the ceiling excluding eating areas should be hung at least 7' off the floor. Sconces can be added to any room for extra lighting and ambiance.  They should be mounted 60" off the floor and mounted no closer than 6-8 feet apart.

Entryway Lighting

To find the right sizing for an entryway add the length of the room by the width and height of the room in feet.  That number is the number in inches  that the size of the fixture should be.

L + W + H = Fixture size in inches

Note: If there is a window above the front door the fixture should be centered in that window.

Hallway Lighting

For hallways there should be a fixture every 8-10 feet.

Dining Room Lighting

A dining room chandelier should be no wider than 12 inches less the width of the table and should sit 30" above the top of the table for a standard 8' ceiling. Raise the fixture 3" for each additional foot of ceiling height.

Kitchen/Dinette Lighting

For general kitchen lighting ceiling mounts, semi-flushes, cans, or even recessed fluorescent fixtures are acceptable.  Mini-pendants or island lights may be used for increased task lighting and should be hung about 30" above the counter depending on ceiling height. Mini-pendants should be spaced 12"-18" apart.

For lighting a smaller eating area like a dinette, the fixture should be hung 30' - 36' inches off the table top and should be at least 12" less the width of the table.

Bathroom Lighting

For lighting a bathroom, the fixture most commonly used is a single vanity light mounted directly above the mirror with anywhere from 3-8 inches on either side of the vanity.  If there is a double sink vanity, two vanity fixtures can be used mounted and centered over each sink.

For extra light, sconces can be added on either side of the mirror mounted 60" up from the floor.  An overhead light can also be used for better 360 degree lighting with less shadowing.

Outdoor Lighting

Wall fixtures can be added on one or both sides of the front door.  They should be 1/5 the height of the door and mounted about 66" from the floor, slightly above eye level.

H/5 = Fixture Height

When mounting, always mount on the keyhole side of the door, or use a chain hung fixture for general illumination.  Sidewalks and smaller paths may be lit with small path lights mounted every 8 - 10 feet for safety.  Post lights can be added near driveways for added illumination and security.
